Campbell Award for Research & Innovation: Robert J. Medoff, MD

The Campbell Award for Research and Innovation honors individuals with outstanding clinical and basic science investigations that contribute to the understanding, care, and prevention of bone and joint conditions and injuries. Honorees must have demonstrated achievements in research and continued innovation that have had an impact on patient outcomes, technique, and/or discovery… and we had TWO!

The first award for Research and Innovation was presented by Dr. Chris Ihle, incoming President, Campbell Club Alumni Board, to a dear colleague and fellow member of the class of 1984.

Dr. Robert J. Medoff is an Assistant Clinical Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at the John A. Burns School of Medicine in Hawaii and the Founder of TriMed Inc.

Dr. Medoff received his MD from the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia and completed a general surgery residency at the University of Hawaii Integrated Surgical Residency in Honolulu. He completed his orthopaedic residency at the Campbell Clinic in 1984 and joined our staff, specializing in hand and upper extremity surgery.

From very early on in his career and with a background in computer science, he was most interested in the design and development of orthopaedic implants. Currently, holding 25 patents or pending patents in upper extremity fixation, his most notable design was the axial compression screw for forearm fractures, the TriMed Wrist Fixation System. As a foremost expert in hand and upper extremity injuries, he teaches extensively around the world.

In addition, he continues to service field clinics of Shriner’s Hospital for Crippled Children around the globe. He is a member of the AAOS and the Hawaii Orthopaedic Association, for which he served as past president, and as a foremost expert in hand and upper extremity injuries, he has published book chapters and journal articles and continues to teach extensively around the world (approximately 25 instructional courses per year).

For his achievements in innovation, research, design, and development of orthopaedic implants, we were pleased to recognize Dr. Robert Medoff at the Saturday night Gala.
