History of Campbell's Operative Orthopaedics

Nearly 90 years ago, Dr. Willis C. Campbell set down in longhand his vast knowledge of orthopaedics in a volume he called Textbook on Orthopaedic Surgery. This became the first edition of Campbell’s Operative Orthopaedics, published in 1939. The book has been revised and updated by Campbell Clinic staff members every four to seven years and has been translated into seven languages. Medical professionals around the world often refer to Campbell’s Operative Orthopaedics as “the bible of orthopaedic surgery.”

The 15th edition of Campbell’s Operative Orthopaedics, available in March of 2026, is a four-volume set covering the full range of orthopaedic surgery subspecialties. This edition features the all-new Campbell’s Concepts that represent essential knowledge shared by Campbell Clinic surgeons to optimize patient outcomes. Each of the 94 chapters follows a standard template with updated techniques, illustrations, and bulleted text. New high-quality videos treatment algorithms have also been added. The eBook version that is included with each purchase provides access to the complete collection of content and references as well as allowing the reader to search, customize content, make notes and highlights, and have the content read aloud.

The Campbell Clinic Foundation provides research, editorial, and administrative support for the publication. The text is written entirely by Campbell Clinic surgeons, with most of the Clinic’s physicians contributing to the 15th edition. Edited by Drs. Frederick Azar, Jeffrey Sawyer, and Thomas Throckmorton, the purpose of the book remains unchanged from Dr. Campbell’s vision: to present up-to-date reliable information that allows orthopaedic specialists to provide the best of care to their patients.
