Overview
The UTHSC-Campbell Clinic Fellowship in Hand Surgery is an ACGME-accredited, 12-month fellowship in surgery of the adult hand.
This fellowship provides extensive exposure to surgical management of acute and reconstructive upper-extremity procedures as well as education about clinical nonsurgical problems. Experience is gained in a clinical practice weighted toward hand surgery problems (est. 90% to 95%) in addition to operative experiences in ASC, Level 1 trauma centers and high-volume hospitals.
Clinic responsibilities
Clinic responsibilities include patient work-up, obtaining history and physical examination data, ordering appropriate imaging, and presenting patients to the attending staff physician. Fellows perform all procedures as directed, including removal of pins, administration of injections, removal of sutures, debridement of wounds, and removal of casts.
Hospital duties
Hospital duties include rounding current patients, checking preoperative laboratory work, making postoperative checks on patients before discharge, first call for all in-patients, consultations, and presenting patients to attending staff physician. During surgery, fellows serve as first assistant to a staff primary surgeon as directed. Fellows write postoperative orders and dictate operative notes as directed. Fellows perform all anesthetic blocks as directed and ensure proper imaging is on the view board in the OR.
Education
Teaching opportunities include Friday Afternoon Meetings (FAM), the weekly didactic training for residents, mid-week conferences, journal clubs, and assisting residents with hand surgery.
Weekly Subspecialty Conference Attendance
The Orthopaedic Hand Conference is held every Wednesday at 6:15 am in the Wolf River Conference Room, which includes attending surgeons, fellows, and all residents on the Hand service.
Research
The fellow is required to work on at least one research project, which is expected to result in a presentation, publication, or both. The fellow has support from the research and regulatory specialists, nurses, specialized statistical analysts, and librarians for both orthopaedic and medical school libraries as well as experienced medical writers for advising, editing, and other support.

Achievements
In 2025, Dr. Weller and the Hand Team received two honors from Mid-American Orthopaedic Association for their research project entitled “Prospective, Randomized, Controlled Trial of an Opioid-Sparing Protocol vs. Standard Opioid-Based Protocol Following Open Reduction Internal Fixation of Distal Radius Fractures.” The meeting was held in San Antonio, Texas on April 9-13. The first honor, Edward D. Henderson, MD, recognizes the top Physician in Training Award. The study was selected as one of the top two presentations at MAOA. It was presented at the American Association Orthopaedic Society meeting in New Orleans in March 2026.
