Overview
The Orthopaedic Trauma fellow receives comprehensive, rigorous experience at Regional One Health, a high-volume Level 1 trauma center that serves as a referral facility for Tennessee, Arkansas, Mississippi, Missouri, and Kentucky, with four fellowship-trained orthopaedic traumatologists on staff.
This Orthopaedic Trauma Association (OTA)-accredited program is primarily focused on the management of complex polytrauma, including pelvic, acetabular, and periarticular fractures; reconstructive fracture management, including nonunions, malunions, and deformity correction.
Operative experience
The fellowship provides extensive operative exposure of complex fractures, and the fellow consistently experiences some of the highest volume of pelvic and acetabular injuries in the country. The fellow interacts with two orthopaedic trauma teams including daily morning report/fracture conferences, after which he or she has first choice of operative cases in a minimum of three orthopaedic trauma rooms that are available daily. More recently, the fellow has had increased opportunities to pursue arthroplasty for hip and acetabular trauma as well as soft-tissue coverage procedures.
Education
Teaching opportunities include morning conferences at Regional One Health, weekly Fellow conferences, a weekly didactic conference for UTHSC-Campbell Clinic residents (Friday Afternoon Meetings – FAM), quarterly journal clubs, local and national courses, and assisting residents in surgery. The fellow also is encouraged to attend several instructional courses and national meetings throughout the year.
Weekly Subspecialty Conference Attendance
The Trauma team holds conference on Monday and Friday at 6:30 am, and Morning Reports at 7:00 a.m. on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Saturday, and Sunday. These meetings include attending surgeons, fellows, and all residents on the Trauma service.
Research & resources
Time and facilities are available for clinical and basic science research projects. The Campbell Clinic Foundation offers study coordinators, regulatory specialists, statistical analysts, library services, and experienced medical writers for advising, editing, and publishing scientific papers. Fellows have access to industry-supported subspecialty cadaveric labs and courses.
