Overview
The Campbell Clinic Foundation facilitates two foot and ankle fellows each year in this American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society-accredited program. Fellows spend 5 days each week with the fellowship-trained faculty balancing a heavy operative schedule and in-office experience to ensure comprehensive and rigorous training in foot and ankle care.
Clinical experience includes obtaining history and physical examination data from new patients, ordering appropriate imaging, and presenting the patient to the attending staff physician. There is excellent exposure to acute and reconstructive surgery of the foot and ankle, as well as broad exposure to clinical nonsurgical problems.
Operative experience
Fellows are active participants in all surgeries, including open (ORIF, external fixation, etc.) and closed treatment of straightforward and complex distal tibial/fibular and ankle/foot fractures, (calcaneus, metatarsal, talon, tibial, and fibular) and joint dislocations, as well as arthrodesis procedures of the ankle. In addition, the fellowship includes extensive trauma experience at Regional One Health and Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital.
Education
The fellowship also focuses on education, with ample time for reading and research. Teaching opportunities include weekly Foot and Ankle conferences, Friday Afternoon Meetings, the weekly didactic conference for UTHSC-Campbell Clinic residents, Journal Clubs, as well as assisting residents in surgery. Fellows are required to work on at least one research project, which is expected to result in a presentation, publication, or both.
Weekly Subspecialty Conference Attendance
The Orthopaedic Foot & Ankle Conference every Tuesday morning in the Campbell Clinic Wolf River Conference Room at 6:15 am with attending surgeons, fellows, and all residents on the Foot & Ankle service.
Research & resources
Facilities are available for research projects within the various departments of the University of Tennessee Health Science Center. The Campbell Clinic Foundation provides fellows with research support, including study coordinators who facilitate regulatory matters, statistical analysis, library services and literature reviews, data tracking and subject management, plus medical writers for advising, editing, and other production resources.
Fellows have access to industry-supported subspecialty cadaver labs and courses, basic science PhDs and a simulation center within the UTHSC College of Medicine.
The Foot and Ankle team has several service programs each year, including semi-annual Healing Soles outreach clinics, where foot and nail care are provided to unhoused individuals; and student mentorship programs for high school and college students.
