Pulling up to the FedEx Event Center on September 19 felt like arriving at the ultimate college tailgate. An old-school pickup truck decked with mums, college pennants and an ice-filled cooler marked the entrance, setting the tone for what was inside. The University of Memphis drumline welcomed guests with the rhythm and energy of game day.
After checking in for the auction, we stepped into a space transformed. The room was lined with team pennants, camera flashbulbs, and green turf underfoot — a full-on tailgate scene brought indoors. As the sun set over Hyde Lake, the DJ rolled a soundtrack with classic stadium tunes. Guest snapped photos, mingled and played Cuervo corn hole outside. The only challenge of the night? Deciding what to eat first — smoky brisket sliders, crispy catfish quesadillas, or savory tamales.
Halfway through the evening, the Memphis Spirit and Pouncer swept into the room, drawing everyone’s attention to the stage. Dr. Fred Azar opened followed by the Voice of the Tigers’ Dave Woloshin leading the live auction with Mednikow jewelry, local artwork, private dinners and trips catching bids from each direction. Then came the moment that truly captured the Foundation’s mission: donors raising their cards high to support orthopaedic education, research, and outreach that moves lives in Memphis and beyond.
Everywhere you looked, fans showed up in full spirit — Baylor, Buckeyes, Tigers, Turps, and even a coach who looked like he’d stepped right out of Animal House. The fun was infectious, but so was the purpose behind it all.
As a guest, I left with a full heart — and a deep appreciation for the sponsors, host committee, and 300 fans who made the night possible. Campbell Celebrates: Game Day is more than a party; it’s a tradition that unites purpose and pride for a cause that keeps our community (and patients like me) moving.
Next year’s celebration will be announced soon—giving us another chance to cheer, connect, and give back in true game-day style.
