The 2022 Willis C. Campbell Club Award for Teaching recognizes individuals with extraordinary talent and dedication to teaching. Honorees demonstrate excellence in teaching and mentorship of peers as well as surgeons–in-training, instilling knowledge of culturally competent care, inspiring colleagues, and leading by example.
Dr. Derek Kelly presented the Teaching Award to Dr. Hassan Mir, class of 2008, in recognition of his extraordinary dedication to teaching and mentorship. Dr. Mir is Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of South Florida and is on staff at the Florida Orthopaedic Institute where he had completed his trauma fellowship. He is the Director of the Orthopaedic Surgery Residency Program and the Director of the Orthopaedic Trauma Service. Prior to that, he was Associate Professor of Orthopaedics and Rehabilitation and Associate Director of Trauma at Vanderbilt University.
He received his MD from West Virginia University School of Medicine. Following residency, he completed a trauma fellowship at the Florida Orthopaedic Institute. In addition, Dr. Mir earned an MBA from the Auburn University Physician Executive MBA program.
Dr. Mir is a member of no less than 18 professional orthopaedic organizations, including the AAOS, AOA, OTA, and CDC, where he serves in various leadership capacities. He serves on several editorial boards, including JOT, JAAOS, JBJS, SMJ, and OTA International and has published innumerable articles (~100) in high-impact journals.
His commitment to education extends beyond the hundreds of lectures and courses he has taught over the years, as he spends many hours outside of the operating room to teach residents, mentoring and advocating for each. His commitment won him the Vanderbilt Orthopaedic Institute Kenneth D. Johnson Resident Teaching Award the during his first year in practice there. Through his efforts as Orthopaedic Residency Director, he is credited with considerably raising OITE scores and creating an overall stellar program at the University of Florida.
We are very proud to present this year’s Campbell Award for Teaching to Dr. Mir!
