On September 20, the Campbell Clinic trauma team hosted a special lower extremity surgical approaches lab in collaboration with their partners at Smith + Nephew. The event was made even more remarkable by the presence of visiting professor Dr. Roy Sanders, a renowned figure in orthopaedic trauma surgery, who led the lab instruction.
“One of the great features of this residency is our close working relationships with industry partners, who leverage their incredible expertise and resources—and their proximity to our practice area—to provide unique learning opportunities like this for our residents,” said Chris Cosgrove, MD, an orthopaedic trauma sub-specialist at Campbell Clinic. “This partnership allows our trainees to gain hands-on experience with leading-edge techniques and insights from experts in the field.”
Dr. Sanders, a legend in orthopaedic trauma surgery, currently serves as Chairman of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of South Florida and President of the Florida Orthopaedic Institute. A Past President of the Orthopaedic Trauma Association (2004-2005), he has had an illustrious career that includes training more than 120 fellows, authoring over 150 articles and abstracts on orthopaedic trauma and foot and ankle surgery, publishing several textbooks on orthopaedic trauma, and delivering hundreds of courses and lectures worldwide.
20 Campbell Clinic orthopaedic surgery residents participated in the lab, which was guided by both trauma and sports medicine faculty. The session emphasized hands-on training, allowing residents to practice surgical techniques under the direct mentorship of Dr. Sanders, who is widely regarded as one of the foremost calcaneal surgeons.
“At Campbell Clinic, we don’t just learn approaches from a textbook; we engage in hands-on surgical exposures in the lab,” noted one participant. “Residents and fellows have the unique opportunity to work shoulder-to-shoulder with one of the great calcaneal surgeons of all time!”
The lab served as an invaluable learning experience, reinforcing Campbell Clinic’s commitment to providing world-class training through practical application and direct mentorship from leading experts.
