In memory of Dr. S. Terry Canale

Our colleague, friend and mentor, Dr. S. Terry Canale, former Campbell Clinic Chief of Staff and President of the Campbell Clinic Foundation passed away August 13, 2023. Dr. Canale is known throughout the world for his vision and contributions to leadership, education, research and mentoring. He spent his entire career with Campbell Clinic specializing in pediatric orthopaedics and was one of the early pioneers in the field of pediatric sports medicine.

Orthopaedic education and research were hallmarks of Dr. Canale’s work. He mentored hundreds of orthopaedic residents, medical students and researchers over his career. He served as co-editor for five editions of Campbell’s Operative, which is known as “The Bible of Orthopaedic Surgery”. He also coedited Campbell’s Core Orthopaedic Procedures, Operative Pediatric Orthopaedics, and was the founding editor of Campbell Orthopaedic Journal.

He was regarded as a national and international leader in orthopaedic surgery, having led numerous organizations, including the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS), the Pediatric Orthopaedic Society of North America (POSNA), and Orthopaedics Overseas (now Health Volunteers Overseas).

Dr. Canale also served local civic organizations and garnered countless honors, including Outstanding Alumni Award for Christian Brothers High School and the University of Virginia. In the 2016, AAOS honored him with the William W. Tipton, Jr., MD, Leadership Award, which recognizes outstanding leadership that has benefitted the orthopaedic community, patients, and the American public.

He was regarded as a Renaissance man; he had many other interests, including tennis, pickleball, art, travel, mission work and community service. He could always be counted on for a unique perspective on whatever the topic. His creativity and determined personality produced many great and lasting accomplishments, while always making the tasks interesting and fun. Dr. Canale will always be remembered as a visionary leader, wise teacher, trusted confidant and loyal friend.

Please continue to pray for his wife, Sissie, children, Haines Loden and Robb Canale, and five grandchildren.

Any tribute gifts to the Campbell Clinic Foundation to honor Dr. Canale will benefit the Canale Presidential Research Fund, which ensures his legacy of orthopaedic excellence and leadership endures for generations to come.
