Ladies and Gentlemen: Know Your Bone Health

Each May, National Women’s Health Week is a time to encourage women to prioritize their health at every stage of life. For the Campbell Clinic Foundation, wellness for both men and women is a year-round commitment. This month, we’re shining a spotlight on a condition that often goes undetected in men and women: osteoporosis.

Osteoporosis is far more common in women than in men, so much so that nearly 80% of Americans with osteoporosis are women (1). Despite its prevalence, it often goes unnoticed, and it can progress without symptoms until a fracture occurs. That’s why early detection and prevention are so critical.

There are ongoing efforts to expand screening opportunities for patients. The Campbell Clinic Foundation research team is currently researching new methods to detect low bone density using standard X-rays. If successful, this approach could improve early diagnosis especially in settings where traditional bone density scans (like DEXA) aren’t readily available.

While our study is still in the early stages, we strive to make it easier for people to identify and understand their bone health and take action sooner.

In the meantime, we encourage all women, especially those approaching or past menopause, to speak with their healthcare provider about bone health and risk factors. Strong bones are essential to lifelong strength, independence, and quality of life.
