Campbell Award: Innovation and Research – Jeffrey M. Smith, MD, FAAOS, FACS, CPC

The 2024 Campbell Award for Innovation and Research was presented to Dr. Jeffrey Smith, MD, FACS, PCC, of San Diego, California. This award recognizes outstanding clinical and basic science investigations that contribute to the understanding, care and prevention of bone and joint conditions and injuries. This years’ honoree has made significant strides in equipping orthopaedic surgeons to maintain both excellent practice standards and self-care.

A practicing Orthopaedic Traumatologist, Dr. Smith is currently the Co-Director of the San Diego Orthapaedic Trauma Fellowship, the Founder, CEO and a surgeon coach at SurgeonMasters. Drawing on over 20 years of experience within academic and private healthcare systems, Dr. Smith developed his own system to manage the ups and downs of a demanding and high-performance practice. His 8 PRACTICEs of Highly Successful Surgeons addressed communication, leadership, time/life management, and more. He is the founder and lead trainer for Physician Coach Training, an ICF level 1 accredited program. Dr. Smith continually strives to make a positive impact through teaching colleagues, residents and fellows how to become better surgeons. He is a sought-after speaker, blogger, podcaster and educator with a passion for performance improvement and physician wellness.

Dr. Smith completed his residency at the Campbell Clinic in 1995 and a Trauma Fellowship in 1997. Between his times and the Campbell Clinic, he completed a Joint Reconstruction and Trauma Fellowship at the Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre and Regional Trauma Unit at the University of Toronto, Ontario, Canada. He began his practice as Chief of the Division of Orthopaedic Trauma and the University of California San Diego. After five years at UCSD, he entered private practice and formed Orthopaedic Trauma & Fracture Specialists Medical Corporation with the ongoing goal to make significant progress in the care of trauma and fracture patients in San Diego County.

Dr. Smith completed his MD at Rush Medical College of Rush University Medical Center and a BS is Biomedical/Medicinal Engineering from Northwestern University, with additional studies in Biomedical Engineering and Material Science at FAU Erlangen-Nürnberg.
