A Dedication Honoring the Life and Legacy of Dr. Benjamin Mauck

On July 11, 2023, our Campbell Clinic and Campbell Clinic Foundation family suffered an unimaginable loss when Dr. Benjamin Mauck was tragically killed in the very place where he dedicated his life to healing others. His death left heartbreak among his colleagues, patients, friends and family.

Today, we reflect and celebrate the remarkable physician, friend, father and husband he was. In a permanent tribute, Campbell Clinic has officially dedicated the new Collierville clinic to Dr. Mauck. A commemorative plaque now stands in the facility’s main lobby and serves as a daily reminder of the lives he touched through his extraordinary care and compassion.

Campbell Clinic partners and staff gathered the evening of July 10 for a closed ceremony – one designed to highlight what Ben meant to the Campbell Clinic family. We were reminded of his excellence as a physician; the many ways he led beyond his years; and the small attributes of his that, in their absence, leave a tremendous void.

“As a young staff member, Ben was already seen as a doctor’s doctor across our community. When Ben had something to say, everyone listened. I looked forward to hearing his perspective on everything, because I knew he was coming from the right place. He was a mission-focused person, and he always thought about our patients, trainees and employees. All decisions were based on that over self. He was a force in so many ways and lived the priorities that we all aspire to when it comes to faith, family and patient care.”

– Dr. Fred Azar, Chief of Staff, Campbell Clinic

Your stories have reminded us of the profound impact Dr. Mauck had – not only as a skilled surgeon but as a devoted friend, mentor, avid outdoorsman, co-resident and community leader. His legacy lives on in every patient he treated; every colleague he supported; and every trainee he guided.

“He had a unique way of making everyone around him feel as if they were equals. What I saw in Ben, above all the skills he possessed and all the professional accolades that came along with that, was a greater passion for being the best friend, husband and dad he could be. Ben knew that, while the work he did was important, it was the lives he touched and his family that mattered most.”

– Daniel Shumate, CEO, Campbell Clinic

We’re proud to share that his legacy has inspired important change, as well. In response, the Dr. Benjamin Mauck Act was introduced and passed in 2024 to increase protections for health care providers across Tennessee. This law enhances the penalties for violence within health care facilities. The law is also an important step to ensure the people who care for patients can do so without fear.

Dr. Mauck’s impact will never be forgotten. It lives on in every life he changed and in the lives we are committed to continuing to serve. We will continue to honor Dr. Mauck through action, healing and hope.
